Millions of people headed to the New World. It was not the spirit of adventure, it was the naked misery at home accom-panied with the hope for a better life on the american continent, that rushed the people into the emi-gration. With the departure, they known, that they never will see again their families, relatives and friends to the end of life.
The emigration from the county of Daun
In the 19. Century the county of Daun was one of the poorest regions all over Germany. It was not unusual that from there many people decided to leave their homes an tried to find a better life in the New World. In his book "The American emigration in the county Daun " Mr. Josef Mergen listed the known emigrants who came from the county of Daun. The list is not complete because during the world wars an unknown number of data were lost and many peoples emigrated illegal without con-sent. However, it contains nearly 2000 persons with name, date of birth and domicile.
